A lifeless body of a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps was on Monday recovered from the debris of a collapsed three storey building in Ebute-Metta, Lagos.
According to the South-west Zonal Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the lady simply identified as Oluwakemi, was discovered, evacuated and later identified by her father.
With the NYSC corp member’s death, the death toll in the building collapse rises to 10 that is four females and six males while 23 occupants were rescued from the building.
“The body of the NYSC’ lady, Oluwakemi, just discovered and evacuated now. The father identified her. She was found with her phone in her hand,” Farinloye said in a chat with BUSINESSINSIDERNG on Monday.
Farinloye, also disclosed that the occupants of the collapsed story building have been served notice to quit due to the distressed nature of the building but refused to relocate.
“The landlord son in care of the collapsed building who had vacated the collapsed building reported that he had given the occupants of the building quit notice to evacuate but they refused. He revealed that he had to leave the building and rented an apartment in the same vicinity, saying the rental fees have not been paid for a long time.”
It was, however, gathered that the old three-storey building which collapsed at No. 24 Ibadan Street, off Herbert Macaulay Way, Ebute-Meta on Sunday night happened when the residents had gone to bed, according to NEMA.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said in a statement that they were alerted of the collapse at 9:48 p.m.
The statement added that firefighters, as well as officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency and Lagos State Ambulance Service, have mobilised to the site.
